=== Asset-light business model === Else is using third parties to manufacture its products, given its recent launch. As volumes increase, Edison expects the company’s contract manufacturing (CMO) network to expand. For the foreseeable future, however, management wishes the organisation to remain asset light. As critical mass is reached (which Edison believes to be c 2–3m lbs of dry powder per year in Else’s case), we may see dedicated lines at CMOs, but Edison does not expect a fully owned manufacturing facility to be built in the shorter term. While the asset-light strategy undoubtedly has benefits in terms of lower capital requirements, there can be higher associated costs – both with checking that each batch is manufactured to the correct specification and the time taken.
