Harrington Lodge was originally built as a hunting lodge for Richmond Park and the surrounding areas in circa 1712. There were later additions we believe in 1935 just before WW2, to improve and extend the house, by the then owner who was an architect.
A handsome period Grade II listed home set on a picturesque road
The structure of the house has largely remained unchanged since then, but it has been well maintained, modernised and improved by the current owners for nearly 60 years, whilst serving as a marvellous family home.
On arriving at Harrington Lodge you are immediately impressed with this very special house. There are manicured front gardens, box sash windows showing off the character and period of the property, as well as a fine doorcase, with bowed pediment on pilasters.
Description
Moving into the house, there is an entrance hallway, with a staircase leading to the first floor. An appealing study falls to the right of the hallway, which leads to the elegant drawing room with a feature fireplace, French doors and high ceilings. The majestic dining room follows with it's array of windows and doors and an abundance of natural light. It is here that your eye is drawn to the magnificent garden and a truly unique plot.
Clifton Hill is a charming, wide, tree-lined street in the heart of St. John's Wood.
A further reception room, overlooking the front follows, as well as a fully fitted kitchen, flower room and two cloakrooms.
The house is adorned in wisteria both on the façade and along the railings, with a beautiful magnolia tree taking precedence in the front garden creating a wonderful picturesque sanctuary, with the utmost privacy from the street.
The first floor provides wonderful accommodation, with six bedrooms laid out across this floor, creating excellent lateral living.
The house is a classic example of late Regency architecture constructed of London stone under a tiled roof and presented to an exceptionally high standard, following a complete renovation in 2015 by well known interior designer, Cinny Bethell.
A truly spectacular feature of this property is the magical garden that has been lovingly maintained and cared for by the current owners, creating a mature and attractive area to rest, relax and enjoy. There is an array of mature trees, flowers, plants and shrubs, as well as a large lawned area that has been witness to many parties and celebrations over the years. The garden has been featured numerous times in 'Open Gardens' as prime example, raising money for charity. To the front there is private off street parking for a number of cars and a garage for covered parking and storage.
There are some wonderful features including beautifully proportioned rooms, high ceilings, original period features and large sash windows providing an abundance of natural light.
The first floor provides wonderful accommodation, with six bedrooms laid out across this floor, creating excellent lateral living. The principal bedroom suite is positioned at one end of the house with a dressing area, fitted wardrobes and an en suite bathroom. Five further bedrooms follow, three that overlook the front of the house, and two to the rear, that have views to the garden and Richmond Park beyond. There are two bathrooms to accompany these bedrooms and a kitchenette.
The house is surrounded by beautifully designed and landscaped gardens which comprise of Olive trees, neat box hedges, window boxes, 2 wonderful magnolia trees, herbaceous borders of roses and hydrangeas with rows of pleached beech trees providing an intimate private space.
Petersham is situated close to the centre of Richmond and moments from the very popular 2,300 acres of Richmond Park. The Thames towpath is also close- to- hand and there are numerous sporting and recreational activities within easy reach. Petersham Nurseries, with it's recently awarded Michelin green star, is nearby as is the famous Ham Polo Club and Richmond Golf Club.
