=== Origins of BNP Paribas === The idea for BNP Paribas came about through the merger of two French banks: Banque Nationale de Paris (BNP) and Paribas in 2000. BNP was itself the result of the 1966 merger between Banque Nationale pour le Commerce et l'Industrie (BNCI) and Comptoir National d'Escompte de Paris (CNEP), both of which had a considerable history in the French banking sector. The creation of BNP Paribas established one of the largest global banking groups.
