More than 80 years after National Socialists seized the oil painting “Polnischer Ulan auf Vorposten im Winterwald” (Polish Lancer at an Outpost in the Winter Forest) by Wojciech Kossak (1857–1942) from the Petschek family in Aussig, Czechoslovakia, the Lindenau-Museum Altenburg and its governing body have decided to return it to the heirs of its previous owners. The restitution is the result of a research project funded by the German Lost Art Foundation, in which the museum uncovered the origin of the Nazi-looted artwork. The painting once hung in the breakfast room of the Petschek family home in Aussig (now Ústí nad Labem, Czech Republic). When they fled from the Nazi regime in September 1938, the Petscheks were forced to leave virtually all of their personal possessions behind, including this painting. All the family’s property was expropriated in 1939. This picture, along with other artistic objects and furniture, were brought to Berlin, where in May 1941 they were auctioned “by order of the Authority”—i.e. for the benefit of the German Reich—by the Union auction house.
