IdeaEdit

The £70B global garment care industry is broken. By washing our clothes we’re polluting our planet. Every year the UK laundry industry emits 265k tonnes of CO2 and uses 42% of our drinking water, equivalent to Lake Windermere. Washing clothes causes micro-plastic pollution, accounting for >35% of all ocean plastic. On top of this, 350,000 tonnes of clothing enter UK landfill every year, much of which is due to stains and fading of otherwise good clothes.

Oxwash is an end-to-end washing service combining award-winning quality, NASA-inspired technology, and an obsession with sustainability.

It’s our mission to bring net-zero washing to everyone, everywhere.

We’ve received £4.3M in funding to date from investors including a cofounder of Twitter, a cofounder of Indeed.com and Reckitt, the multinational behind Dettol and our partners, Vanish. Our ‘lagoons’ are operational in London, Oxford and Cambridge serving both individuals and businesses with revenue growing rapidly at more than 15% MoM over the last year (Sept 21 Rev: £69k, EBITDA :-£67k).

Increasing demand for responsible washing has been driven by circular fashion platforms such as Depop, Hurr and Thrift+. However, a solution ensuring truly sustainable cleaning and fulfilment does not exist. Oxwash aim to be that platform, with many brand-name rental and re-commerce platforms already using Oxwash to power their operations.

TeamEdit

Dr Kyle C Grant, Founder and CEO:

After multiple roles at Nasa, including astronaut health and life support systems engineer, Kyle completed a DPhil in Synthetic Biology at the University of Oxford. After frustration with the awful laundry facilities at the world's top university, Kyle founded Oxwash, then a student laundry service, with a spray painted deliveroo backpack. With the rapid growth in both B2C and B2B clients, it was critical to build a solution that held true to Kyle's core sustainability principles. Thus the first pilot Oxwash 'lagoon' was engineered and brought online in Oxford. Kyle has been recognised for his innovative leadership and entrepreneurship by Forbes 30-under-30 and Barclays Entrepreneur, plus selected for the prestigious University of Oxford: Oxford Foundry Elevate program.

Thomas de Wilton, Co-founder and COO/CSO:

With a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Oxford, Tom leads the operations and sustainability agenda of Oxwash. With experience building luxury treehouses, including for the annual Treehouse Festival of Arts and Music in Oxford, Tom is exceptionally well equipped to engineer and iterate Oxwash's end-to-end process. With a passion for data-driven efficiency and accountable sustainability metrics, Tom has recently been granted a full scholarship at the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainable Leadership.
